SS 2016 Modern Fables | Modern Fables looks at how designers examine clothing’s capabilities to tell stories. It’s about animist traditions, folk stories and exploring ancient symbols from local cultures. This takes us through a journey of our favourite characters and monsters with makers using visual references known to all since childhood.

Mystery and Animism - Animism (from Latin animus, -i "soul, life”) is the worldview that non-human entities (animals, plants, and inanimate objects or phenomena) possess a spiritual essence. Animism is used in the anthropology of religion as a term for the belief system of some indigenous tribal peoples, especially prior to the development of organized religion.

Although each culture has its own different mythologies and rituals, "animism" is said to describe the most common, foundational thread of indigenous peoples' "spiritual" or "supernatural" perspectives.

We examine the mystery and majesty of classical folk visual codes from Europe as well as Africa through the use of oversized shapes and masks that have a very Totemic feel either in clothing and furniture design.
